Leadership Challenge

As part of the award, we have to pass our skills as artists to other people. Our group are presenting lessons to   11-14 year olds, in teams of 2-3 people.  The lesson my group is presenting will be split into 2 half's, with myself leading the first part about creating plots, and elements of a story, and the two other girls in my group leading the session on making pop ups.

We also had to  find an engaging way to get feedback for our session, so we decided to use pop ups as a type of feed back form. This was our prototype:

The captions read (from right to left) What did you like the most, What did you learn, & What would you improve?

One of the activities I will do with the children is a story bounce, an activity where each member of the group has a turn to create a small part of a story, which can give you ideas for a plot, which is what I am hoping to achieve. To help with this, I have printed pictures of objects/settings, characters and speech to help the plot develop  and give the children ideas.

When creating the final product, the children will have to work in groups, so we are including a starter(lead by the other members of our group) about teamwork.

On the day, we experimented with different laayouts for our classroom, and found a mixture of sitting on the floor and on desks for different activities worked best.

Artwork Challenge

For our artwork Challenge, we had to try and improve our skills on a subject we weren't all ready good at. I have struggled in the past with drawing realistic portraits and with painting. My original challenge was to paint a realistic portrait using the hair to capture motion, but after some experimenting with materials,I decided I suited oil pastels better during my experimentation with materials shown below:

The things I will practice are:

Proportions of the face

Hair in motion

Drawing people

Blending oil pastels

I decided on this challenge to refine my use of pastels, improve my skills in showing motion, improve drawing people, and get better at proportions.

The resources I will use to achieve this are oil pastels, paper, pencils, rubber and examples to look at.

Supports I will use are  my family/friends, art awards advisor's  the people in my group, artists (gallery's /on line) and research using books and the internet.

Whilst completing he challenge  I decided to work with watercolours, and I got the best result by using mainly watercolours and a little white chalk to pick out highlights.

RV

It is interesting to see the advancement of style and thought between the initial self portraits and the future ones of the ‘girl with the orange hair’.

The self portraits do not reflect enough personality and character, and are not as engaging.    It seems as if there must have been both practise and consideration given to the subject of portraiture for the watercolour pictures to show such significant improvement.    Both paintings of ‘girls with orange hair’ are much more expressive and characterful.
